Say Goodbye to the Wind is a radio art installation that blends wind, tides, and maritime communications. Along the coastline, a kite is flown 100 meters above the ground. A VHF antenna is attached to it, allowing it to pick up distant radio communications—such as fishermen’s conversations, exchanges between container ships and the monitoring center, maritime weather reports, or a lost boater.
A micro-contact attached to the kite’s line makes the wind audible at this altitude, while a hydrophone gurgles with the rising tide. The characteristic, distorted voices of VHF radio blend with the ebb and flow of the wind and waves. These three sources compose a generative ambient soundscape—a windy continuum punctuated by liquid textures and noise-like bursts. The piece is broadcast on FM by an “orchestra” of radios scattered across the beach.
